It developed under the name of “Ragusa” in the 14th century as a maritime city-state. In its heydays, during the 15th and 16th centuries, it was a rival of Venice.
The old town is a great place to explore. We bought a Dubrovnik Pass and did a self guided walk based on a lot of the free attractions, stopping every now and then for a drink, or snack or icecream. There are a lot of places that are free, such as the cathedrals, market, etc. It's well worth going inside the buildings if you have time.The Old Town Dubrovnik, the oldest part of the city, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, known as one of the most beautiful and best-preserved medieval areas in the world.
