It developed under the name of “Ragusa” in the 14th century as a maritime city-state. In its heydays, during the 15th and 16th centuries, it was a rival of Venice.

The old town is a great place to explore. We bought a Dubrovnik Pass and did a self guided walk based on a lot of the free attractions, stopping every now and then for a drink, or snack or icecream. There are a lot of places that are free, such as the cathedrals, market, etc. It's well worth going inside the buildings if you have time.
